The Hidden Hormone Disruptor In Your Foods

The Hidden Hormone Disruptor In Your Foods

The foods you consume on a daily basis can do one of two things. They can provide the nutrition needed for gut health, growth, detoxification, energy production, hormone and neurotransmitter synthesis as well as overall bodily health and function. Or your foods can cause toxicity in your body, lead to inflammation production and therefore contribute to hormone imbalance, among many other health complications.

First things first, I will always encourage a diet based around whole foods. Eliminating the processed trans-fat, preservative laden, sugary so called ‘foods’ and instead building the diet up with loads of fresh vegetables, some fruits, nutritious olives, olive oil, nuts, seeds, coconut products and ethically raised animal products.  Fermented foods and broths are also encouraged as a part of a nourishing diet for hormone health.

You may be following this ‘to a t’, but still noticing...

How To Find A Nourishing Dairy-Free Milk

How To Find A Nourishing Dairy-Free Milk

I’m no coffee addict, but I do enjoy a morning bulletproof and catching up over an almond milk latte every once in a while.

Almond and coconut milk are my go-to dairy milk alternatives which I now much prefer the taste and texture over regular coffee (with cows milk). When a cafe uses a milk that has nasties added, I can usually tell and my naturopath instinct kicks in to do some detective work. So you can imagine my disappointment now that most cafes have done the old switch-a-roo and started using dairy free milks that are not up to my (admittedly high) naturopath standards. Relax, I’m not talking about Nutrition Republic– they still get my tick of approval

For those that don’t do so well on dairy, there are now many alternatives available, but only a few that I can confidently recommend as healthy options. I know it can get confusing and hard keeping up with the...

Our Fourth Trimester Experience

It's midday here as I attempt to multi-task to find the words for this post, watch over my baby girl sleep in her rocker, while I glance up to capture the highlights of the Ellen show.  Oh how life has changed! I am twelve weeks into motherhood and my days (and nights) are now full of breastfeeding, burping, reading baby books and of course, loads of cuddles. I have to admit, it's been the most challenging but rewarding and joyous experience.

As Amelia is past the new born phase and our 'Fourth Trimester' is over, I wanted to share with you how we filled up our precious twelve weeks post birth (if you missed it, read our birth story here). Why? With all the attention surrounding baby, the health and wellbeing of Mumma is overlooked during this phase, often contributing to future exhaustion and illness.

After reading books 'First Forty Days' and 'The Fourth Trimester', I understood the importance to nourish my temple during these initial weeks post birth, so I could best provide...

How To Support Your Liver When Celebrating

How To Support Your Liver When Celebrating

It’s that time of year where your calendar is full with social outings and celebrations over fine food and often an abundance of alcoholic bevvies. Christmas is a time to relax and be merry and this may mean letting your hair down…a little too far and consequently upsetting your liver health.

Your liver plays an important role in metabolising your hormones to allow excess levels to be safely removed from your body. If the detoxification processes in the liver (Phase 1 and Phase 2) are overwhelmed with filtering toxins (such as alcohol), your hormone health metabolism may be compromised.

Along with staying hydrated, here are my top ways to use foods to promote a healthy and happy liver and support your hormone health through the silly season.

THE GUT: LIVER CONNECTION

If your digestion is in tip top condition, this will help out your liver. The liver is the filter of...

Naturopath Approved Party Foods For Kids (+ Adults)

Naturopath Approved Party Foods For Kids (+ Adults)

Wheat, gluten, sugar and then dreaded additives (colours and preservatives) are frequent occurrences at most kids parties. In clinic, I hear time and time again from upset mothers who take their children to child care, parties, visits to the grandparents (the list goes on)…and back they come with signs and symptoms of junk food overload. This can include behavioral issues, skin conditions (such as eczema), digestive disturbances and a struggling immune system for days following.

We all love to be able to spoil our little ones, with loads of hugs and kisses, presents and yes, the sweet treats. Its ok for kids to have some sweet surprises, but you can do this without exposing them to unnecessary nasties. I challenge you to try whipping up my Naturopath approved kids treats instead!

A Healthy Treat To Satisfy Your Sweet Cravings

A Healthy Treat To Satisfy Your Sweet Cravings

One of the most common symptoms that presents to me in Naturopath clinic are the struggle with constant sweet cravings. Although I will always endeavour to find the underlying cause, whether it’s investigating for imbalanced micro biome, testing for hormone imbalances and /or overcoming nutritional deficiencies, it’s helpful to have healthy options to offer in place of that sugar-filled block of chocolate or packet of lollies.

Introducing my Lemon Gummies- perfect for overcoming your choccie cravings by changing that taste in your mouth after meals, providing vitamin C for your immune system and gelatin for supporting your gut health. Plus they’re yummy enough to please even the little people in your home!

LEMON GUMMIES

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

1 1/2 cups fresh lemon or apple juice

3.5 tbsp gelatine (I use this organic brand)

½ tbsp raw honey (optional)

4 drops doTERRA Lime Essential Oil

My Grain & Nut Free Brownies Recipe

My Grain & Nut Free Brownies Recipe

I hear you! It can be tough to please all the members of your household when there are intolerances, allergies and nut free school requests. Now you can still give everyone a choccie fix without the refined sugar, grains (therefore gluten), dairy and nuts. This recipe ticks all the boxes and can be adapted further to create a lower fructose option.

Along with the refreshing essential oil aroma and taste, there is one secret ‘filler’ ingredient that not even my sister could detect (who is very well versed with grain free cooking). Nope, it not nut meal, seed meal, tapioca or sweet potato… it’s black beans! Sounds a bit strange, but trust me, they create a moist brownie that will please everyone’s chocolate cravings (yep even a pregnant woman ). If you missed me talking about my pregnancy choccie craving, you can read more about my second tri experience over here.

This delish recipe was...

The Fertility Challenges Often Overlooked

The Fertility Challenges Often Overlooked

What a beautiful gift and miracle of life- an opportunity to create another human being and give them unconditional love as their parent.

Unfortunately for many couples, this gift comes wrapped with a number of challenges, heightened stress levels and the emotional roller coaster which follows. According to the World Health Organisation report published in 2012, one in four couples in developing nations have been affected by infertility. The Australian Bureau of Statistics from 2009, stated that one in six Australian couples reported to have fertility issues.

Heartbreaking to hear, 20-25% of these cases are diagnosed as unexplained infertility. (1) What does that mean? Those patients have been delivered inconclusive results from basic fertility related testing, they don’t fit into medically accepted fertility or endocrine related diagnosis, and/or the structure and function of reproductive...
