Lifestyle Hacks To Sleep Soundly

Lifestyle Hacks To Sleep Soundly

Far too often we often forget the major role which lifestyle factors play in regulating our sleep- wake cycle. While trying to overcome my past sleep disturbances, I found addressing lifestyle is just as important. You can read about the importance of sleep, causes of insomnia and my top herbs and diet recommendations to support healthy sleep patterns, here. Today I want to share more tips for you to gain regular, restful shut eye.

To gain a good night sleep, avoid vigorous exercise late at night. If you are limited to after work movement, instead undertake relaxing exercises and activities such as walking, yoga, stretching, gardening and pilates.

Exercising in the  morning, however is an effective natural sleep aid. Naturally increase your Cortisol to support energy production in the morning, by following short but sweet high intensity, short duration movement.

If you...

Lifestyle Hacks For Healthy Hormones

Lifestyle Hacks For Healthy Hormones

Have you ever thought about how your lifestyle is effecting your hormone health? For a long time, I was so focused on getting my diet right, that I forgot about the important environmental impacts that were contributing to my health challenges.

I now cringe when I jump in a car with a ‘smelly tree’, hold my breath when I walk past someone with a strong perfume scent and avoid bright lights at night. Why? As I was writing my book: Balanced, The Natural Way To Healthy Hormones, it became very clear how disruptive environmental stressors can be to achieving regular periods, clear skin, relaxed moods and vibrant energy levels.

Where should you start? Right here, with my powerful guide to encourage an environment that supports healthy hormones for you and your loved ones.

Plug your laptop, computers and if possible, iPads into your internet modems by cord or cable and turn off the...

Natural Contraception Options

Natural Contraception Options

Was last weeks post enough for you to question refilling your next pill script?

You may be relieved to learn that safer alternatives are available.

I personally use, recommend and teach the below method of natural contraception. There are no side effects, no script required and you gain powerful knowledge of what is happening throughout your cycle. No more unnatural withdrawal bleeds (nope, they’re not periods when you are on the pill) or side effects  from synthetic hormone exposure.

Barrier methods such as condoms and diaphragms are an obvious option. However, they can still be ineffective if used incorrectly during the fertile phase of a woman’s cycle. Allergies to latex are also common.

Other natural contraceptive methods available help to educate women about their own cyclic changes. Understanding these crucial signs empowers a woman with the personal awareness of when she is and is not fertile. Sound less invasive? It...

How To Halt Hair Loss & Regain Your Luscious Locks

How To Halt Hair Loss & Regain Your Luscious Locks

Among the top symptom complaints women present to me with, hair loss is high on the list. No one wants to lose head head. When experienced, hair loss can create issues with insecurity, anxiety and feelings around loss of femininity.

Tune in if you’re noticing clumps of hair loss when shampooing, an increased number of strands around your home, or when looking in the mirror, you’re noting significant thinning of your once luscious locks. I will unravel the possible causes of your hair loss, and where you can start, to re gain healthy hair growth.

The causes of hair loss can vary in each case, but generally there is one or more of the following factors contributing to the condition.

A diet lacking in protein (particularly the amino acid L-Lysine), Iodine, Omega 3 essential fats, Iron, as well as lack of Vitamin D rich sunshine exposure, are all known...

How To Balance Your Blood Sugar Levels

How To Balance Your Blood Sugar Levels

Ever felt a jittery high post a sugary drink, a sleepy arvo after a lunch time sandwich, or mood swings when you’re hanging out for your next meal? These are common symptoms of imbalanced blood sugar levels.

Blood sugar imbalance is something I have personally struggled with over the years. I was in a mindset that I needed to load myself up with cereal, fruit and toast for brekkie, another large meal including bread for lunch, plus plenty of grain based snacks in between. Although I ate lots, I was always hungry.

As well as satisfying my hunger, these food choices were driven by fear of low blood sugar (hypoglycemic) shakes, dizziness and hanger (angry and hungry) before my next meal. This was something I frequently experienced in my teens and little did I know I was making all the wrong food choices!

Keeping it very simple, when all foods containing carbohydrates (mainly fruits, vegetables, grains,...

Our Story Of Pregnancy Loss

Our Story Of Pregnancy Loss

Where Our Journey Began

Now a distant memory, I think back to the moment we discovered the two pink lines on the pregnancy test. I had waited all week for hubby to arrive home from working away so we could find out if this was ‘our time’. The nervous wait was replaced with joy when we discovered a positive reading. We were over the moon to be become parents to another little soul.

Fast forward to eleven weeks gestation, past the dreaded nausea, daily napping and ultra-sensitive nose. I had just started experiencing relief of my symptoms and we’d begun our camping adventure along the Gibb River Road from Darwin, to Broome. There was so much to be grateful for being out in nature, amongst the warming sunshine and spending quality time with good friends. We had just started sharing our exciting news with loved ones, so what happened next hit us for six.

We reached the NT & WA border and it was time for a toilet stop. Instead, what I...

Embrace Your Inner Child

Embrace Your Inner Child

Yesterday I could not keep the smile off of my face, giggling to myself (and with work colleagues) about my little morning incident

For those of you who missed it, after enjoying a shower post hot yoga class, I proceeded to change into my work clothes… only to realise I had left my skirt at home. Oh S**t! For those of you who have been to a hot yoga class appreciate the fact that wearing my sweaty shorts was not an option. So off to work it was (with a wet towel wrapped around me) to start my first consultation of the day (slightly awkward to say the least).

Luckily my friend saved the day and delivered me a skirt to work, so the drama didn’t last too long. Phew!

As I reflected on this incident over the day (with more smirking involved), I realised how easily life gets too serious. I am, along with many others guilty of going through the day stressed abut meeting deadlines, finishing jobs , paying bills, worrying about what we have to do...

How to Achieve a Restful Sleep

How to Achieve a Restful Sleep

Stress and sleeplessness used to be my enemy.

I was a perfectionist with an overactive mind, always worrying about what people think. This would cause me to lie awake for hours on end at night…mulling over the day that was. The conversations I had with people, how I could have performed  better (yes, that perfectionism was always creeping back in) and worrying about the ‘to-do’s’ for the following day.

Also moving from a quiet farm life, to living on the corner of a noisy roundabout in the big smoke (Adelaide), contributed to my case of insomnia. I remember waking zombie like, after getting in just a few measly early morning hours, before it was time to face the day. This is how I operated- tired, but very wired.

Now, as a Naturopath I am seeing the same picture in many of my patients. The physical, mental and emotional daily stress contribute to a state of overwhelm for many. You push through the day,...
