When Oils Go Off

When Oils Go Off

Oils just aint oils. There are several types, which play different roles in the body, and each has a different ability to stay fresh under heat, light and air conditions. Today I’ll discuss the essential fatty acid’s (EFA’s), Omega 3 and Omega 6. These are called essential, because our body cannot make them individually, or from other fats in the diet. They instead need to be supplied through our diet in order to use for their many functions.

Essential fatty acids play important roles in the body, particularly nurturing for the nervous, immune, reproductive and cardiovascular system. They allow cells to form and function properly, are powerful antioxidants, have anti-inflammatory properties (omega 3’s only) and allow adequate detoxification to occur in the body.

The healthier sources of Omega 3 fatty acids are from cold water fish and marine animals such as salmon, trout,...

Problems of the pill

Problems of the pill

For many women, taking the small oral contraceptive pill is very convenient. It so called ‘regulates’ cycles, protects against unwanted pregnancy and allows for a sporadic sex life. But is it worth it?

Although the information of contraceptive pill side effect use is well known in the medical industry, it is not diligently communicated to the public.  This information can be accessed if you read the fine print, warnings are included with prescriptions. However, time and time again I see friends, family and patients who are blissfully unaware of the potential dangers of their daily pill. Many tell me their doctor never mentioned the risks involved!

I went down this same path (you can read about ‘My Personal Journey’ here), starting on the pill in my mid teens, which lead to a roller coaster of health challenges.  Luckily, down the track I became well educated through my Naturopathic studies about the dangers this small...

Gut Healing Creamy Hot Chocolate

Creamy Hot Chocolate

Creamy Hot Chocolate… sounds naughty right? Not this recipe!

Firstly, this one is made using quality cacao powder (as oppose to refined and sugar filled chocolate powder) and it passes on the usual additions of pasteurised milk and sugar.

What you will find is gut healing gelatine as the ‘creaming agent’, blood sugar stabalising ghee (or butter) and energy enhancing Medium Chain Triglyceride (MCT) oil. When you add MCT oil (along with other good fats) into your diet, your body uses them (ketones) as a source of energy for the brain, which can be easily drawn upon and lasts for much longer than fast burning glucose energy sources.

If you have a sweet tooth, you have the option of adding raw honey or your fav natural sweetener and enhancing the flavour sensation with a drop of high quality essential oils.

Get all of this in my Creamy Hot Chocolate recipe & enjoy the increased energy and brain power, stronger immune and...

No-Tox Cleaning Options For Your Family

No-tox Cleaning Options For Your Family

Practising as a Naturopath, it is evident the dangerous ways toxins are contributing to chronic disease states. The environment you expose your body to has the potential to express genes (for the better or worst). A nourishing diet full of organic foods is a solid foundation for your health, as is a stress free lifestyle, regular healthy movement and minimising toxins in your home.

Reducing toxins in body care products plays an important role in promoting balanced hormone health (among much more). Seeking out and using toxin-free cleaning products around the home has an equally important value to the health of you and your loved ones.

Just as I recommend with body care products, it is important to understand what your cleaning products contain. Watch out for these nasties on labels:

  • Abbreviations: PEG, PPG, MEA, DEA, TEA, BHA, BHT, DMDM, D&C, FD&C
  • ‘eth’ ingredients: oleth, cateareth, laureate, steareth
  • ...

How to Create a Healthy Emotional Connection with Food

How to Create a Healthy Emotional Connection with Food

Over the weekend I made a Banana Cake (a healthy version of course) and I returned to my youth. Joyous memories flooded back- running around in the shearing shed, playing in the wool bales and stopping for smoko with the smelly shearers. I smiled.

Food is a powerful trigger for certain thoughts, memories and feelings- happy, sad, content, nervous, excited, jealous, anxious, depressed and even confidence. The connection of emotions, moods and feelings affecting the types and amounts of foods we reach for, is just as strong.

As emotions have a profound impact on digestive health, it is important to become aware of any underlying thoughts you have around foods. Acknowledge these emotional connections to overcome any negative effects they may be having on your overall health, aiming to create a healthy mindset around your daily diet.

As I listen to my patients, the most common negative emotional connections to food, include:...

Why I don’t wear Sunscreen

Why I don’t wear Sunscreen

With every opportunity I have you will find me outside embracing the sunshine. When the sun pops out from behind a cloud I’ll race out to catch it, or if Im driving I’ll wind down the window to feel the energising rays on my skin.

As spring rolls around and the sun starts to appear (we’re still waiting!!) I receive many queries from concerned patients and readers wanting to know how I protect myself from sunburn. I am naturally blessed with a darker skin tone and don’t burn easily, but even in long periods in the sun you will never catch me applying sunscreen and I will rarely wear a pair of sunnies. Why you ask? Here goes…

It may come as a shock in our sunscreen-happy society, but you’re skin was naturally designed to be exposed and nourished by the sun. Sunshine works as a major player in optimal health by enhancing your production of vitamin D. Technically a...
